Dungeons & Dragons coming to DVD Nov 7 '06

"Los Angeles, CA –BCI, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Navarre Corporation, has obtained DVD rights to the original 1983 animated series “Dungeons & Dragons.” The complete series, featuring all 27 episodes in a collector’s four-disc boxed set, will be released under BCI’s Ink & Paint brand on November 7th at a suggested retail price of $49.98. The announcement was made today by Jeff Hayne, Director of Acquisitions, BCI.

“As we continue to build our catalog of classic animated series from the ‘70s and ‘80s, the industry is taking note of the success of these titles,” said Hayne. “We’re fortunate to have this unique opportunity to market ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ to the same audience that has been enjoying our most recent animated programming.”

“Dungeons & Dragons” tells the tale of six kids who, after riding the Dungeons & Dragons rollercoaster, mysteriously get sucked into its fantasy world. Once there, the kids are met with a variety of monsters and entities, but to their delight, they are also greeted by the mysterious Dungeon Master, who gives each of them a magical item to use to defend themselves against the evil beings." Brothers of The Head - Conjoined twins punk rockers (Apple Trailer)

"Brothers of the Head is the feverish, mind-bending odyssey of conjoined twins Tom and Barry Howe who were plucked from obscurity by a 1970s music promoter and groomed into a boy band. Grappling with impossible love, artistic rivalry and a dark inner life, the twins embrace their freakishness and spit it back in the form of searing Punk Rock."

The Trailer For Paul Verhoeven's ZWARTBOEK Has Nazis, Bombs, And Titties!! (Ain't It Cool News)

(from the site)

Merrick here...

www.filmfocus.nl has posted the trailer for Paul Verhoeven's new film.

Know ye that the entirety of this trailer is in Dutch. Although, it is possible to decipher a graphic that exalts the film as being "from the director of SOLDIER OF ORANGE and BASIC INSTINCT".

Sigh.

At least they didn't choose SHOWGIRLS.

The movie's called ZWARTBOEK (which means BLACKBOOK in Dutch). It's set in World War II and is about a German Jewish girl who joins the resistance in Holland to find those responsible for the betrayal/murder of her family.

The film represents something of a "return to roots" for Verhoeven, who American audiences may best remember for ultra-violent, super-sexy little ditties like STARSHIP TROOPERS, ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL, HOLLOW MAN, and BASIC INSTINCT (as mentioned above).

Love him or hate him, the biz always seemed edgy and interesting when he was around; it'll be fascinating to see if his future brings him back to the American mainstream once more. And, if it happens, I wonder how audiences would react given the current social/political climate?

At swinging convention, sex is on everyone's mind - Yahoo! News

"Last night it was really special," said Rhodes, who is divorced and makes a living giving massages in the Midwestern state of Iowa. "There was a couple from Mexico, a couple from Virginia and a couple from Ireland, from Australia."

"I like to participate in life as much as possible," she said with a broad smile.

Rhodes was among some 3,000 people gathered Saturday at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas for the annual Lifestyles conference, a five-day, $700-per-couple event that offers a mix of seminars, socializing and sex.

Early Saturday, Rhodes was back for more, joining the action in a suite where more than a dozen couples were having sex. (more at link)

Clerks 2 - CRITIC FLEES 'SMUT' SCREENING

"DON'T joke about women, donkeys and bestiality if you expect Joel Siegel to watch your movie. That's what director Kevin Smith found out when the pun-loving 'Good Morning America' film critic stormed out of a press screening of Smith's 'Clerks II,' which opens Friday - an act that's sparked a vicious war of words between the two.

'Time to go!' roared Siegel to his fellow critics. 'First movie I've walked out of in 30 [bleeping] years!' His tirade came 40 minutes into the long-awaited Weinstein Company sequel to Smith's 1994 cult classic about two foul-mouthed Long Island convenience store clerks who razz customers and goof off.

In the scene that sent Siegel to the exit, the characters graphically discuss hiring a woman to perform sexual favors on a donkey. Siegel told Page Six: 'It was so foul and mean and repulsive. I finally realized I could not say anything positive . . . I wasn't ready for this kind of smut . . . I hope he doesn't make any more movies.'

An apoplectic Smith fired back on his MySpace blog: 'Getting a bad review from Siegel is like a badge of honor. This is the guy who stole his mustachioed-critic shtick from Gene Shalit years ago, and still refuses to give it back. This is a guy who seemingly prides himself on his own nyuk-nyuk wordplay. For 'Pirates 2,' he made us all titter with 'Yo, Ho, Ho and a Bottle of Fun' . . . He made us squeal with delight when he wrote, 'Wheelie Good Time for 'Cars.' ' I mean, Fozzy [bleeping] Bear laughs at this guy.'" (more) CRITIC FLEES 'SMUT' SCREENING - New York Post Online Edition: Gossip

Mideast crisis drives Bush to colorful language - Yahoo! News

"'I think Condi (Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice) is going to go pretty soon,' Bush said.

Blair replied: 'Right, that's all that matters, it will take some time to get that together.'

The two leaders also referred to an offer by Blair to help. Blair said Rice has 'got to succeed' if she goes out to the region.

Bush replied: 'What they need to do it to get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit.' Shortly afterwards Blair noticed the microphone and hastily switched it off, but not before the recording had reached news media." Mideast crisis drives Bush to colorful language - Yahoo! News

Christian comic books: The Messiah is the message (aka 'Jesus: You're soaking in it/him')

MINNETONKA, Minn. — Zap! Pow! Amen!

Whether it’s fanciful tales of jewel-colored angels battling demons for a man’s soul or retellings of familiar stories from the Bible, Christian comic books are taking wing.

“Christians have the best stories to tell,” said Sherwin Schwartzrock, a Christian comic book artist and graphic designer. “The world is full of hurting people, with drug abuse and with all types of problems that we have as human beings. Jesus Christ is an answer.”

Creating comics is a delicate balance for Christian artists and writers using a medium sometimes viewed as frivolous or tawdry. But Schwartzrock says comics are like movies: They can spread an uplifting message as easily as an immoral one.

The number of Christian comic books has grown rapidly in the last few years. Some creators teamed up to form Community Comics LLC, a cooperative that links Christian comic-book artists and helps promote and distribute their books.

While reliable sales figures aren’t available, the number of titles has at least doubled, if not tripled, in the past year alone, said Steve MacDonald, who runs the website www.christiancomicbooks.net that lists Christian comic books and graphic novels and where to get them. (full article)

Boing Boing: After stroke, UK woman speaks with Jamaican accent

Boing Boing: After stroke, UK woman speaks with Jamaican accent:
Researchers at Oxford University have found that patients with foreign accent syndrome have suffered damage to areas of the brain that affect speech.

The result is often a drawing out or clipping of the vowels that mimic the accent of a particular country, such as Spain or France, even though the sufferer has limited exposure to that accent. The syndrome was first identified during the Second World War when a Norwegian woman suffered shrapnel damage to her brain. She developed a German accent, which led to her being ostracised by her community.

Evangelical evolution

(06-19) 04:00 PDT Washington -- SOMETIMES, very important elections receive very little attention.

When the Southern Baptist Convention elected the Rev. Frank Page as the group's new president at their meeting last week in Greensboro, N.C., the news appeared on the back pages of most secular newspapers -- or it didn't appear at all.

But Page's upset victory could be very significant, both to the nation's religious life and to politics. He defeated candidates supported by the convention's staunchly conservative establishment that has dominated the organization since the mid-1980s. His triumph is one of many signs that new breezes are blowing through the broader evangelical Christian world.

No, this is not some liberal victory. Indeed, the Baptist Press reported Page as going out of his way to tell reporters that he was not elected "to somehow undo the conservative resurgence" in the convention. But he also signaled that the spirit he hopes to embody is quite different from that of the angry, right-wing, politicized preacher who has been a stock figure in American life for more than two decades.

"I believe in the word of God," Page said. "I'm just not mad about it." (more)

Tolkien - the New Shadow - His sequel to The Lord of the Rings

"Tolkien started his sequel to The Lord of the Rings a number of times but never got very far. The links below are scanned images of the pages of the book.

The story begins one hundred and five years after the fall of the Dark Tower and is set in Gondor. Tolkien wrote about the story:

'I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the downfall of Sauron, but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace and justice and prosperity would become discontented and restless - while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors - like Denethor or worse. I found that even so there was an outcrop of revolutionary plots, about a centre of secret Satanistic religion; while Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and going around doing damage. I could have written a 'thriller' about the plot and its discovery and overthrow - but it would be just that. Not worth doing.' " Tolkien - the New Shadow

The Book of Were-Wolves Index

Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was a Vicar in the Church of England in Devon, an archaeologist, folklorist, historian and a prolific author. Baring-Gould was also a bit eccentric. He reputedly taught classes with a pet bat on his shoulder. He is best known for writing the hymn 'Onward Christian Soldiers'.

This book is one of the most cited references about werewolves. The Book of the Were-Wolf takes a rationalistic approach to the subject.

The book starts off with a straightforward academic review of the literature of shape-shifting; however, starting with Chapter XI, the narrative takes a strange turn into sensationalistic 'true crime' case-studies of cannibals, grave desecrators, and blood fetishists, which have a tenuous connection with lycanthropy. This includes an extended treatment of the case of Giles de Rais, the notorious associate of Joan of Arc, who was convicted and executed for necrosadistic crimes. Margaret Murray had a controversial theory about this subject.

This should be taken as approximate, especially before about 1700, since a word may have been used in conversation for hundreds of years before it turns up in a manuscript that has had the good fortune to survive the centuries."
