Inmates tunnel into prison

A GANG of prisoners at a Brazilian jail spent months planning a breakout and digging a tunnel in their bid for freedom only to emerge in the prison yard.

The prisoners, at Timoteo prison in southern Brazil, emerged from their tunnel, which had reportedly taken the 67 men months to complete, just 30cm short of the main perimeter wall.

Prison guards, who had discovered the escape plan but decided to wait and see what would happen, were waiting at the tunnel's exit for the men to emerge and promptly took the crestfallen prisoners back to their cells, Journal da Globo reported last week.

"They were so frustrated and we could not hold back our laughter, they were so dumb," a guard told the newspaper.
