Global success for War of Worlds
War of the Worlds is the top film in both the US and UK
Sci-fi thriller War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise, was the highest earning global film last weekend, with takings exceeding $200m (£114m).
Steven Spielberg's blockbuster took $113.3m (£64.4m) in North America and $102.5m (£58.3m) elsewhere between Wednesday and Sunday.
The latter figure includes $15.7m (£8.9m) in the UK, $15.1m (£8.6m) in Japan and $7.8m (£4.4m) in Spain.
In both Russia and Taiwan it broke the record for best foreign film opening.
With a reported budget of $135m (£77m), War of the Worlds fell short of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith but easily outperformed other recent blockbusters like Batman Begins and Kingdom of Heaven.
