Internet comics - Who needs the funny pages?

The comics have been with us for over a hundred years, but with the rise of the Internet, the genre has exploded. Now there's no need to badger the big syndicates, the free weekly or even the school paper to get published. All a budding artist needs now is a computer and the desire. Some artists self-publish, others contract that pesky html work out to Keenspot, which hosts some of the best.

Probably the best thing about Internet comics is the freedom — Without having to cater to the widest possible audience or worry about offending Aunt Hortense, topics for online strips aren't limited to tepid observations, heartwarming families, and fun-for-all-ages wacky hijinx, like your local newspaper. Many artists have opted to do more personal work, examining alternative lifestyles, race, relationships, and yes, sex (beyond NSFW). Still, there's an abundance of (great) comics about computers, fanboys, gaming, science fiction, video games, and the whole roommate thing.
