Guided By Voices' Propeller sells for staggering $6,200
by: Don Thrasher
Collecting Guided By Voices vinyl just got a lot more expensive.

Propeller, the fifth self-financed full-length by Guided by Voices, has always held a hallowed place in the band’s lore because it was the transition album that marked the group’s rise from complete obscurity to indie rock darlings after nearly a decade of writing and recording. The album, which was originally released in 1992 in a limited numbered edition of 500 copies with handmade covers, is certainly destined for a place in the history books now because in late August an autographed vinyl copy sold for an astounding $6,200 on EBay.

“It’s gratifying to know I created something that caused this degree of obsession,” Guided By Voices leader Robert Pollard said recently. “I put it up for $800, expecting to get maybe $1,000. It started going for that amount and it was shocking because that’s a lot more than a Beatles’ ‘Butcher cover’ is going for, but understandably so because each cover is unique and there were only 500 copies.”
