Lexington Herald-Leader | 06/17/2005 | Kaleidoscopes: Art you can play with

From the Lexington Herald-Leader:
"If you think of kaleidoscopes as simple toys, a visit to Pop Art a collection of intricate, beautiful kaleidoscopes at Artique, should change all that.

Hundreds of designs from more than 50 artists are on exhibit and for sale at both Art-ique locations (Lexington Center and the Mall at Lexington Green) through July 15.

These interactive pieces of art look as impressive sitting on the shelf as when you're peering inside at the intricate patterns, the result of exact craftsmanship by the artists, explained Artique owner Mike Stutland. The system of mirrors requires meticulous calculations.

'It's a real blend between art and science,' he said. 'It's really fascinating.'

The incredible variety of styles is what makes kaleidoscopes so collectible. These are crafted from wood, stained and blown glass, brass, stone and even paper.

Prices too, can vary. Though some designs start at about $15, they can go as high as $3,000."
