Cruise weirdo alert: Tom Cruise’s passions rise to dangerous levels!

After months of sounding all sugary and 'butter won't melt in my mouth', Tom Cruise snapped on NBC's "Today" as he got into a spat with host Matt Lauer over issues that are particularly close to the actor's heart-Katie Holmes, anti-depressant drugs and Scientology.

The interview began on a gentle note with Lauer quizzing the MI star over his upcoming movie, War Of The Worlds. Tom Cruise was particularly happy with the way the movie had shaped up. Asked if he did not want to talk about the way he has been under the public scanner in the past few weeks, Cruise said, "I won't talk about what I don't want to talk about. And it just doesn't matter. It comes down to the movie, you know. And I also feel, Matt, I'm living my life. And I feel fortunate, you know. I feel really fortunate. And I'm excited."

And then Lauer ventured cautiously to the subject of Tom's fiancée embracing Scientology. Cruise responded by saying, "You know, Scientology is something that you don't understand. It's like, you could be a Christian and be a Scientologist, okay. Scientology is something—It is a religion. Because it's dealing with the spirit. You as a spiritual being. It gives you tools you can use to apply to your life." Lauer then asked Cruise to expound on his recent comments regarding Brooke Shields' revelations that she took antidepressants to deal with her postpartum depression. It was here that Cruise sprang up like a cornered tiger, " I've never agreed with psychiatry, ever.

Before I was a Scientologist I never agreed with psychiatry. And when I started studying the history of psychiatry, I understood more and more why I didn't believe in psychology. And as far as the Brooke Shields thing, look, you got to understand; I really care about Brooke Shields. I think, here's a wonderful and talented woman. And I want to see her do well. And I know that psychiatry is a pseudo science," he roared.

Lauer demurred and said that if anti-depressants made Shields' feel well, was that not a good thing?" Do you know what Aderol is? Do you know Ritalin? Do you know now that Ritalin is a street drug? Do you understand that?" Cruise countered. Lauer said that Shields had taken the drug on her own free will, but Cruise appeared to lose his cool at this point and snapped, "I'm saying that drugs aren't the answer, these drugs are very dangerous. They're mind-altering, antipsychotic drugs. And there are ways of doing it without that so that we don't end up in a brave new world. The thing that I'm saying about Brooke is that there's misinformation, okay. And she doesn't understand the history of psychiatry," he said.

Lauer said that there were many instances where Ritalin had worked, at this point Cruise told him that he was being glib, "You don't even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, okay?" Cruise said. Throughout the interview, Tom Cruise pounded on a table and kept pointing fingers at Lauer, prompting the host to say that he was not asking Americans to put their kids on Ritalin.

When Lauer asked him if his goal was to get more people to understand Scientology, Cruise replied that it was. He added that he would communicate to more people about it and see that the information is distributed in a more general way. Analysts are speculating that this interview was Cruise's way of extending the olive branch towards the Scientology advocates who have been critical of the actor's recent activities.
